The "Ao-suge" (Carex leucochlora) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed throughout Japan, Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China, the Far East region of Russia, and the Himalayas. It grows in forests, grasslands, along roadsides, and along seashores, and grows to a height of about 30 cm. It grows in dense clusters and does not produce stolons. The leaves are linear, 2 to 3 mm wide, and 15 to 50 cm long, with a brown leaf stalk at the base. The apical pleurogerous spikelets are male and club-shaped or short elliptic, and the lateral pleurogerous spikelets are female and elliptic to tubular in shape. The female scales have long awns. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "短莖宿柱薹" and in Chinese, "青緑薹草" (qing lu tai cao).
