The "Apoi-yamabuki-shoma" (Aruncus dioicus var. subrotundatus) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a perennial herb that is found in Japan's Hokkaido, specifically in the Hidaka and Sorachi regions. It grows in serpentine areas of the subalpine zone and reaches a height of 20 to 50 cm. The leaves are twice-ternate; the leaflets range from rounded-ovate to broadly elliptical, are thick and stiff, and have sharp serrations along the margins. From around June to July, it produces branched inflorescences at the tips of its branches, bearing numerous small white flowers. Some consider it a form of "Yamabuki-shoma".
