わが国の各地をはじめ、南千島や朝鮮半島に分布しています。山地に生え、高さは５〜１５メートルになります。樹皮は灰褐色から暗灰色で、縦に割れ目が入ります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、１〜３対の小葉がつきます。小葉は長楕円形で、先端は鋭く尖り、縁には浅い鋸歯があります。葉の表面は無毛で、裏面の脈や葉柄には粗い毛が生えます。４月から５月ごろ、前年枝の先端や葉腋に円錐花序をだし、白色の花をいっぱい咲かせます。果実は倒披針形の翼果です。和名の「あおだも」は、この枝を切って水につけると水が青くなるため。別名で、「けあおだも（毛青だも）」とも呼ばれます。材は良質で、野球のバットやステッキなどに利用されます。

モクセイ科トネリコ属の落葉高木で、学名は Fraxinus lanuginosa。英名はありません。

The "Arage-aodamo" (Fraxinus lanuginosa) belongs to Oleaceae (the Olive family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed in various parts of Japan, as well as in the southern Kuril Islands and the Korean Peninsula. It grows in mountainous areas and reaches a height of 5 to 15 m. The bark is grayish brown to dark gray with longitudinal creases. The leaves are oddly pinnate compound, with one to three pairs of leaflets. The leaf surface is hairless, with coarse hairs on the underside veins and petiole. From April to May, the tree produces panicles of white flowers at the tips of the previous year's branches or in the axils of the leaves. The fruit is an oblanceolate samara. The Japanese name "aodamo" (blue damo) comes from the fact that when the branches are cut and dipped in water, the water turns blue. It is also known as "ke-aodamo". The wood is of good quality and is used for baseball bats and walking sticks.
