わが国の北海道から本州の中部地方以北に分布しています。山地の林内に生え、高さは１〜２メートルになります。「ひょうたんぼく（瓢箪木）」の仲間ですが、葉に粗い毛が生えています。４月から５月ごろ、葉腋から白い漏斗形の花を咲かせます。花はしだいに淡い黄色に変化します。別名で「おおばひょうたんぼく（大葉瓢箪木）」とも呼ばれます。

スイカズラ科スイカズラ属の落葉低木で、学名は Lonicera strophiophora。英名はありません。

"Arage-hyotan-boku" (Lonicera strophiophora) belongs to Caprifoliaceae (the Honeysuckle family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed from the Chubu region of Honshu north to Hokkaido in Japan. It grows in forests in mountainous areas and grows 1 to 2 m high. White funnel-shaped flowers bloom from the leaf axils from April to May. The flowers gradually turn pale yellow. It is also called "Ooba-hyotan-boku" in Japan.
