The "Arakawa-kan-aoi" (Asarum ikegamii var. fujimakii) belongs to Aristolochiaceae (the Birthwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in a narrow area along the middle reaches of the Arakawa River, from northern Niigata Prefecture to the vicinity of Oguni Town in Yamagata Prefecture. It grows on mountain ridges and upper slopes, reaching a height of less than 30 cm. The leaves are broadly ovate to ovate, 5-13 cm long, with a slightly pointed tip and a heart-shaped base.The leaf surface is glossy green, hairless on both sides, and typically lacks patterns.
