The African daisy (Arctotis venusta) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from central to western South Africa and into Namibia. It grows in sand dunes and rocky areas, reaching a height of 50 to 70 cm. The leaves are pinnately parted or spatulate, with serrated margins, and are alternate. Both surfaces of the leaves are densely covered with wooly hair, giving them a whitish appearance. From spring to summer, it produces white flower heads at the stem tips. A characteristic feature is the dark blue coloration at the center of the flower heads. Confusion still exists regarding the scientific name of this species. Its Japanese name is "Hagoromo-giku" (Feathered robe chrysanthemum).
