南アメリカが原産です。わが国へは昭和時代の中頃に渡来しました。現在では、本州の関東地方以西に広く帰化しています。茎は直立して、よく分枝し、高さは２メートルほどになります。茎葉は広線形で対生し、半分より上部に鋭い鋸歯があります。夏から秋にかけて、茎頂や葉腋に穂状花序をだし、小さな淡青紫色の花を咲かせます。「やなぎはながさ」に比べて、花筒部が短いことが特徴です。

クマツヅラ科クマツヅラ属の多年草で、学名は Verbena brasiliensis。英名は Brazilian vervain。

The Brazilian verbain (Verbena brasiliensis) belongs to Verbenaceae (the Verbena family). It is a perennial herb that is native to South America. This herb was introduced into Japan in the middle days of Showa Era (1926-1989), and nowadays it is naturalized widely westward from Kanto-district of Honshu. The stem is erect, much branched and can reach about 2 m in height. The cauline leaves are broad linear, opposite and have acute toothed edges at upper-half of leaf blades. The spikes are borne on the stem apices or axiles and bloom small pale bluish-purple flowers. It is defined by shorter corolla tubes than Purpletop verbena.
