The Hooker fishtail palm (Arenga hookeriana) belongs to the Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to Thailand and nortern Malaysia. This shrub grows in rainforests, and up to 60-180 cm in height. It is clumping palm with multiple cane-like stems. The fronds are either simple or shortly-pinnate, up to 60 cm long. The leaves or leaflets undivided, paddle-shaped, with deeply-lobed and sharply-toothed margins, green and glossy on the upper surface and silvery or whitish beneath. The flowers are creamy white to orange, emerging as simple, erect spikes in clusters from the nodes. The fruits are reddish orange when ripe, globular, about 1 cm across.
