The Panicledleaf tick-trefoil (Desmodium paniculatum) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a perennial herb that is widely distributed in the eastern part of North America. It was introduced to Japan in the middle of the Showa period (1926-1989) and has become naturalized mainly in western Japan. It grows in grasslands, roadsides, and wastelands, and grows to about 1 m in height. From July to September, it produces racemes at the top of stems and leaf axils, and produces pale reddish purple flowers. The flowers turn light blue when wilted. The fruit is a loment, consisting of 3 to 5 articles.
