アメリカのロッキー山脈の東側、ワイオミング州東部・サウスダコタ州からニューメキシコ州・テキサス州北部にかけて分布しています。草原や斜面の潅木地帯の砂礫地に生え、高さは１．２メートルほどになります。葉は深裂し、葉脈上や葉縁には鋭い棘があります。４月から７月ごろ、茎頂や枝先に直径７．５センチほどの白い花を咲かせます。花弁は４〜６個で幅広く、皺がよっています。

ケシ科アザミゲシ属の一年草から多年草で、学名は Argemone polyanthemos。英名は Crested prickly poppy、Prickly poppy。

Crested prickly poppy (Argemone polyanthemo) belongs to the Papaveraceae (the Poppy family). It is an annual or perennial herb that is distributed on the east of Rocky Montains in the United States, from eastern Wyoming-South Dakota to New Mexico and northern Texas. This herb grows in grasslands and on sandy gravel areas in shrublands of slopes, and up to a height of 1.2 m. The leaves are partite and have acute spines on the veins and leaf margins. The white flowers about 7.5 cm in diameter will bloom atop of stems and terminal branches from April to July. The flower has 4 to 6, wide petals, with wrinkles.
