東南アジアのマレーシアやタイ、インドネシアに分布しています。湿地帯のマングローブの幹や枝などに着生します。葉は卵形で対生し、葉腋に白い花を咲かせます。基部には大きな擬鱗茎があり、中にある迷路のような空間をアリが住みかとしています。そのアリの餌の食べ残しやふんなどを養分とする共生関係にあります。

アカネ科ヒドノフィツム属の常緑小低木で、学名は Hydnophytum formicarum。英名は Ant plant。

The Ant plant (Hydnophytum formicarum) belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed to Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia in Southeast Asia. This plant grows in trunks and branches of mangrove in wetland belt. The leaves are ovate and arranged in opposite, and the white flowers bloom at the leaf axils. and ants live in a space like a maze inside. This plant is in a symbiotic relationship nutrient-free from the ants' food leftovers and feces.
