北アメリカの東部、ノバスコシア州から西へミネソタ州、南へはフロリダ州南部からテキサス州に分布しています。湿り気のある森ややぶに生え、高さは３０〜６０センチになります。葉は三出葉で、３個の小葉が長い茎の先に集まってつきます。４月から６月ごろ、小さな花を肉穂花序に咲かせます。肉穂花序は仏炎苞に被われます。この植物は、その臭いに引き寄せられたハエによって受粉されます。果実は液果で、太くなった肉穂花序のうえに群がってつきます。果実は夏の終わりから秋にかけて、鮮やかな赤色に熟します。

Jack-in-the-pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum) belongs to the Araceae (the Arum family). It is a perennial herb that is native to eastern North America; from Nova Scotia west to Minnesota, and south to southern Florida and Texas. This herb grows in moist woodlands and thickets, and it can reach 30-60 cm in height. The leaves are trifoliate, with three lealets growing together at the top of long stem. The tiny flowers bloom in the spadix in April to June. The spadix is covered with spathe. This plant is pollinated by flies, which it attracts by smell. The fruits are berries clustered on the thickened spadix. They ripen bright red in late summer and fall.
