The Heartleaf arnica (Arnica cordifolia) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is widely distributed in western North America. It grows in forests and meadows in mountainous areas and is 15-60 cm tall. The rhizome is slender and creeping, and the stem is erect. The basal leaves are heart-shaped with long petioles, and the cauline leaves are arrowhead-shaped, opposite. Bright yellow flower heads bloom at the top of the stem, usually from April to June. The flower heads are 5 to 9 cm in diameter. The fruit is an achene with a pappus, and the seeds are dispersed by the wind.
