The Asarum ichangense belongs to Aristolochiaceae (the Birthwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in southeastern China. It grows in forests, along streams, and in moist shady areas, and is 7.5 to 10 cm tall. The leaves are dark green, cordate or ovate-cordate, with white spots on the midrib. Around April to May, inconspicuous flowers of purplish green to dark purple bloom at the base. There are no petals, and the calyx tube is flattened with three lobes at the tip. There are 6 pistils and 12 stamens. The Chinese name is "小葉馬蹄香" (xiao ye ma ti xiang).
