The Asarum porphyronotum belongs to Aristolochiaceae (the Birthwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in Sichuan Province, China. It grows in moist forest floors and forest edges within forests and shrublands, reaching a height of about 10 cm. The leaves are cordate, with a pale green surface featuring white spots and a purplish-red underside. It blooms with brownish-purple flowers around April to May. In Chinese, it is called "紫背細辛" (zi bei xi xin).
Visually, it closely resembles the Heterotropa genus, but it differs in chromosome number. Recent research indicates it is distinguished from the Heterotropa genus in the narrow sense.
