ロシアの中央アジア地方が原産です。日当たりのよい湿ったところに生え、高さは６０〜９０センチになります。披針形の葉は対生します。７月から９月ごろ、茎の先端の散房花序に「なでしこ（撫子）」に似た緋色の花を咲かせます。花色はふつう赤色ですが、ピンク色やオレンジ色、白色もあります。

ナデシコ科センノウ属の多年草で、学名は Lychnis chalcedonica。英名は Jerusalem cross、Maltese cross。

The Jerusalem cross (Lychnis chalcedonica) belongs to the Caryophyllaceae (the Carnation family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Central Asia region of Russia. This herb grows in sunny waste places and can reach 60-90 cm in height. The leaves are lanceolate and alternate. The dianthus-like scarlet flowers come in the apical corymbs from July to September. The flower color is usually red, sometimes pink, orange or white.
