"Ashitaka-tsutsuji" (Rhododendron komiyamae) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small semi-deciduous tree that is one of Fossa Magna element plants, and distributed only in Honshu, Shizuoka prefecture of Japan. This tree grows in mountains with an altitude of 800-1500 m and up to a height of 2-3 m. The leaves are broard lanceolate, and alternate in 5-whorls on the stems. The purplish red, 2-3 cm in diameter flowers will bloom at the terminal branches around May. There are 7 to 10 stamens.
