インドとスリランカに分布しています。高さは７．５メートルほどで、枝が枝垂れて円柱形の樹冠となります。葉は細長くて光沢があり、縁が波打ちます。春、淡い緑色の星形の花を咲かせます。名前は、仏教に帰依したアショカ王に因みます。幹が真っ直ぐに伸び、むかしは帆船のマストに使われたため、「マストツリー」とも呼ばれます。

バンレイシ科ポリアルティア属の常緑低木で、学名は Polyalthia longifolia (syn. Monoon longifolium)。英名は Ashoka、Mast tree。

The Ashoka (Polyalthia longifolia) belongs to Annonaceae (the Custard apple family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed in India and Sri Lanka. It is about 7.5 m tall with drooping branches that form a cylindrical crown. The leaves are slender and glossy with wavy edges. Pale green, star-shaped flowers bloom in spring. It is named after King Ashoka, a devotee of Buddhism. It is also called "mast tree" because its trunk grows straight and was once used as a mast for sailing ships.
