ネパールから中国の雲南省が原産です。とくにインドのアッサム地方のカシー高原に自生することから、和名では「アッサムにおいざくら」と名付けられました。わが国では、昭和５０年ごろから、山梨県の富士北麓地域で栽培されるようになりました。１０月から１２月にかけて、淡いピンク色の花を房状に咲かせます。中国名では「滇丁香（dian ding xiang）」。

アカネ科ルクリア属の半常緑または落葉低木で、学名は Luculia pinceana。英名は Luculia。

The Luculia (Luculia pinceana) belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is a small semi-evergreen or deciduous tree that is native from Nepal to Yunnan Province in China. It is especially native to the Kasi Plateau in the Assam region of India, hence the Japanese name "Assam-nioi-zakura" (Assam aroma cherry). In Japan, it has been cultivated in the Fuji-northern foothills region of Yamanashi Prefecture since around 1975. It produces clusters of pale pink flowers from October to December. The Chinese name is "滇丁香"（dian ding xiang）.
