インドの北東部からビルマ、ベトナム、中国南部が原産です。低地に生え、高さは６〜２０メートルになります。葉は楕円形から長楕円形で、「ちゃのき」に比べてかなり大きいものです。アッサム茶とセイロン茶のほとんどは、本種から作られています。多雨を好みますが、極端な暑さには耐性がありません。アッサム地方では、日除けの木とともに植栽されています。現在、この日除けの木のほとんどが「インドせんだん（Azadirachta indica）」となっています。この葉は、害虫の幼虫駆除に効果があり、アッサム茶の根を生物学的駆除によって守っています。

Assam tea plant (Camellia sinensis var. assamica) belongs to Theaceae (the Tea family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to north-east India, Burma, Viet Nam and south China. This tree grows in lowlands and can reach 6-20 m in height. The leaves are elliptic to oblong and pretty larger than Tea plant (C. sinensis). All Assam teas and most Ceylon teas are from this plant. It requires a high rainfall, though it does not tolerate extreme temperatures. This trees are planted with shade trees in Assam. Now a days most of shade trees are Neem tree (Azadirachta indica). The leaf of these plants is larvicidal, so it helps in the biological control of the insects attacking the tea roots.
