ヨーロッパとアジア、北アメリカに分布しています。亜高山帯から高山帯の草地や岩礫地に生え、高さは１５〜２０センチになります。葉は楕円形で、綿毛があります。晩春から夏に、花茎を伸ばして、大きな青紫色から赤紫色の花を、一個咲かせます。

キク科シオン属の多年草で、学名は Aster alpinus。英名は Alpine aster。

Alpine aster (Aster alpinus) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to Europe, Asia and North America. This herb grows in sub-alpine to alpine zone, grasslands or rocky areas and can reach 15-20 cm in height. The leaves are elliptic and covered with woolly hairs. The flowering stalk is borne and the solitary, large, bluish-purple to magenta flower blooms from late spring to summer.
