The Kakaha (Astelia fragrans) belongs to Agavaceae (the Agave family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to New Zealand. It grows most commonly in shrublands and forests, reaching a height of 1 m or more. The leaves are sword-shaped, 50-200 cm long, and double-folded in clusters. In spring, it produces large panicles of small, fragrant flowers. It is dioecious, and after flowering, the female plants bear green fruits that turn orange in the fall. The fruits stay on all year round.
