The Astelia nervosa belongs to Agavaceae (the Agave family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to New Zealand. It grows in lowland to montane swamps on both North and South Island and Stewart Island, growing to about 80 cm tall. The leaves are tough, 50 to 150 cm long, and grow in arching clusters. Around November to December, the flower stalks grow and produce inconspicuous flowers, and the fruits ripen from vermilion-orange to red around February to March.
