The Willowleaf aster (Aster praealtus) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is widely distributed in the central United States. It grows in moist prairies, riverbanks, and lakeside meadows, and is 30-120 cm tall. The stem is erect and sparsely branched. The leaves are linear-lanceolate to narrowly elliptic and alternate. The cauline leaves have no stipe. Around October, blue-purple flower heads, 2 to 3 cm in diameter, bloom in abundance at the tips of branches and leaf axils.
