The Chinese violet (Asystasia gangetica) belongs to Acanthaceae (the Acanthus family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to India, Sri Lanka and Africa. It grows quickly, reaching a height of 1-2 m. The leaves are thin and ovate to almost circular. It produces tubular flowers that range from white to pale yellow, wisteria to purple, and other colors throughout the year. The introduction of this weed has caused serious disturbance to natural habitats, particularly in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Pacific islands. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "小花ェ葉馬偕花".
