The Fourwing saltbush (Atriplex canescens) belongs to Chenopodiaceae (the Goosefoot family). It is an evergreen shrub that is found in central and southwestern North America, from South Dakota to Kansas, Texas, California, and Mexico. It grows on dry, sandy or clay soil and can grow up to 4.5 m tall. The leaves are linear to narrowly oblong, alternate, and gray-green in color. It is dioecious, and produces panicles from the leaf axils in summer, producing dull yellowish-brown flowers. The fruit is an utricle that ripens to a light brown color and forms four wings of papery bracts.
