あつばきみがよらん (厚葉君が代蘭)

北アメリカ南部が原産で、高さは２〜３メートルになります。ふつうに「ユッカ」といえば、本種をさします。５月から６月と１０月から１１月の２回、白色の大きな花を房のように咲かせます。秋に咲く花は、淡い紅紫色を帯びます。近縁の「きみがよらん（Yucca recurvifolia）」は、「主なる神のろうそく（Our load's candle）」とも呼ばれていて、これが明治時代の終わりに渡来したとき、本種の和名のもとになったそうです。 |

リュウゼツラン科イトラン属の常緑低木で、学名は Yucca gloriosa。英名は Spanish dagger。 |

The Spanish dagger (Yucca gloriosa) belongs to Agavaceae (the Agave family). It is an evergreen small tree that is native to southern North America. This tree can reach 2-3 m in height. Yucca is usually used to refer to this species. The large clusters are borne and bloom white flowers from May to June and from October to November. The fall flowers are tinged pale peach bloom. The closely related "Kimiyo-ran" (Yucca recurvifolia) is also called "Our load's candle", and this was the source of the Japanese name for this species when it arrived in Japan at the end of the Meiji period. |
