わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道に分布しています。山地帯から亜高山帯の草原や疎林に生え、高さは２０〜３０センチほどになります。６月から７月ごろ、茎の先端に淡紅色や紅紫色の花を咲かせます。和名は、花のかたちを平敦盛が背負っていた母衣（ほろ）に見立てたもの。絶滅危惧種にもなっています。

ラン科アツモリソウ属の多年草で、学名は Cypripedium macranthum var. speciosum。英名はありません。

"Atsumori-so" (Cypripedium macranthum var. speciosum) belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the Chubu region of Honshu north to Hokkaido in Japan. It grows in grasslands and sparse forests in mountainous to subalpine zones, and grows to a height of 20 to 30 cm. It produces light red or reddish-purple flowers at the tips of its stems from June to July. The Japanese name is derived from the shape of the flowers, which resemble the "Horo" (cloak) on the back of Taira no Atsumori (a samurai of the late Heian period of Japan). It is also an endangered species.
