わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道に分布しています。山地帯から亜高山帯の草原や疎林に生え、高さは２０〜３０センチほどになります。６月から７月ごろ、茎の先端に淡紅色や紅紫色の花を咲かせます。和名は、花のかたちを平敦盛が背負っていた母衣（ほろ）に見立てたもの。環境省レッドリストでは、絶滅危惧II類 (VU)に分類されています。
（注１) 写真中２〜４・下の個体群は、管理されている方の話によると、４５年以上前からここに自生しているとのこと。

ラン科アツモリソウ属の多年草で、学名は Cypripedium macranthum var. speciosum。英名はありません。

|
The "Atsumori-so" (Cypripedium macranthum var. speciosum) belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the Chubu region of Honshu north to Hokkaido in Japan. It grows in grasslands and sparse forests in mountainous to subalpine zones, and grows to a height of 20 to 30 cm. It produces light red or reddish-purple flowers at the tips of its stems from June to July. The Japanese name is derived from the shape of the flowers, which resemble the "Horo" (cloak) on the back of Taira no Atsumori (a samurai of the late Heian period of Japan). It is classified as Vulnerable (VU) on the Environment Ministry's Red List.
(Note 1) According to the person in charge, the individual plants shown in photos 3rd to 5th and below have been growing here naturally for more than 45 years.
