オーストラリアの東部が原産です。海岸沿いから山地までに広く生える木性シダ類で、高さは１０メートルほどになります。葉状体は放射状に広がり、細かく分裂して長さは４．５メートル以上になります。耐寒性があり、よく栽培されています。

ヘゴ科ヘゴ属の常緑シダ類で、学名は Cyathea australis（syn. Alsophila australis）。英名は Rough tree fern、Australian tree fern。

The Rough tree fern (Cyathea australis) belongs to Cyatheaceae (the Tree-fern family). It is an evergreen tree fern that is native to eastern Australia. This fern grows widely in coastal areas to the mountains and can reach about 10 m in height. Fronds are radiating, finely divided and up to 4.5 m long. Rough tree fern is a hardy and very popular fern in cultivation.
