The "Awa-kogane-giku" (Chrysanthemum boreale) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is an endemic species of Japan, and distributed northward from Kinki district to southern Tohoku district of Honshu and northern Kyushu. This herb grows in hills to mountains and can reach 1-1.5 m in height. The leaves are broad ovate and deep pinnately. The corymbs are borne at the terminal branches and axils, and the yellow flower-heads, about 15 mm across bloom from October to November. It is also known by the name "Kikutani-giku", and is named after the Kiku-tani at the foot of Kodaiji in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City.
