The "Azuma-nezasa" (Pleioblastus chino) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an evergreen bamboo that is native from Kanto district to Tohoku district of Honshu in Japan. This bamboo grows commonly in mountains and fields, and it can reach 3-4 m in height. The rhizomatous roots are elongated in the ground and form large clumps. The stems are erect and 2-20 mm across. The leaves are lanceolate and 3-7 arranged palmately at the end of twigs. It is also called "Shino" in Japan.
