わが国の本州、関東地方から東北地方に分布しています。山野にふつうに生え、高さは３〜４メートルになります。根茎は地中を横に這い、群生して藪を形成します。茎は直立し、直径２〜２０ミリになります。葉は披針形で、枝先に３〜７個が掌状につきます。別名で「しのだけ（篠竹）」と呼ばれます。 
イネ科メダケ属の常緑タケ類で、学名は Pleioblastus chino。英名はありません。 
The "Azuma-nezasa" (Pleioblastus chino) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an evergreen bamboo that is native from Kanto district to Tohoku district of Honshu in Japan. This bamboo grows commonly in mountains and fields, and it can reach 3-4 m in height. The rhizomatous roots are elongated in the ground and form large clumps. The stems are erect and 2-20 mm across. The leaves are lanceolate and 3-7 arranged palmately at the end of twigs. It is also called "Shino" in Japan.
