わが国の本州、中部地方以北から東北地方に分布しています。山地帯から亜高山帯に生え、高さは２〜３メートルになります。葉は長楕円形で光沢があり皮質です。裏面には灰褐色の軟毛が密生します。４月から６月ごろ、淡い紅色の花を咲かせます。花冠は５裂し、１０個の雄しべがあります。ふつうに「しゃくなげ」というと、この種のことです。 |

ツツジ科ツツジ属の常緑低木で、学名は Rhododendron degronianum。英名はありません。 |

The "Azuma-shakunage" (Rhododendron degronianum) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed northward from Chubu district to Tohoku district of Honshu in Japan. This tree grows in mountain to sub-alpine zone, and it can reach 2-3 m in height. The leaves are oblong, glossy and leathery. They are covered thickly with grayish brown, soft hairs at the underside. The pale rose pink flowers bloom from April to June. The corolla is 5 partite and has 10 stamens. |
