"Ebira-goke" (Lobaria discolor) belongs to Stictaceae family. It is a foliose lichen that is widely distributed in Japan, China, Southeast Asia and Australia. This lichen grows on the trunk of trees in the mountains. The surface of this lichen body is greenish brown to brown, but when it gets wet, it becomes a vivid blue-green color. The reddish brown color in the photo is the apothecia (sporulating organ). The Japanese name comes from "Ebira", which means a basket that a samurai puts arrows on and attaches to his waist.
