アフリカ西岸のマデイラ諸島が原産です。今ではアメリカのカリフォルニア州にも帰化しています。高さは９０〜１８０センチほどになります。晩春から夏にかけて、５０センチ以上にもなる円錐花序をだし、青色または白色の小さな花を咲かせます。

ムラサキ科シャゼンムラサキ属の二年草または多年草で、学名は Echium candicans。英名は Pride of Madeira、Tower of jewels。

|
The Pride of Madeira (Echium candicans) belongs to Boraginaceae (the Borage family). It is a biennial or a perennial herb that is native to the Madeira Islands on the west coast of Africa. It has now naturalized in California, United States. It grows to a height of 90 to 180 cm. From late spring to summer, it produces panicle inflorescences more than 50 cm long, with small blue or white flowers.
