アメリカの東南部から中南部、それにメキシコに分布しています。沼沢や湿地に生え、高さは１メートルほどになります。地下茎で広がり、葉は卵形から長楕円形で、長い葉柄があります。基部は切り形から心形です。弓なりから横臥した花茎を伸ばして総状花序をだし、白色の花を輪生状に咲かせます。萼片に乳頭状の脈があるのが特徴です。

オモダカ科エキノドルス属の多年草で、学名は Echinodorus cordifolius。英名は Creeping burrhead、Spade-leaf sword。

The Creeping burrhead (Echinodorus cordifolius) belongs to Alismataceae (the Water-plantain family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in the southeastern to south-central United States and Mexico. It grows in swamps and marshes and grows to about 1 m tall. It spreads by underground stems and has ovate to oblong leaves with long petioles. The base is truncate to heart-shaped. The arching to recumbent flower stalks grow to form a raceme, and white flowers bloom in whorls. The sepals are characterized by papillate veins.
