The Cretan viper's bugloss (Echium creticum) belongs to Boraginaceae (the Borage family). It is an annual or a biennial herb that is distributed from the Iberian Peninsula to France and northwestern Africa. It grows in sunny wastelands and along roadsides, erect and 25 to 90 cm tall. The leaves are oblong, entire, sessile, and alternate. The reddish purple to light purple funnel-shaped flowers bloom in panicles from July to August.
