アメリカのニューメキシコ州からテキサス州、それにメキシコ北部に分布しています。丘陵の乾燥した斜面や岩礫地に生え、高さは１０〜３０センチになります。単独または５〜２０個の小さな群落になります。茎は直径５〜７センチで、９〜１３個の稜があります。稜には１個の中棘と５〜１１個の縁棘があります。４月から６月ごろ、 茎の先端に近くに、紫赤色で漏斗状の花を咲かせます。果実は鮮やかな赤色から紫がかった褐色で、食用になります。

サボテン科エキノケレウス属の柱サボテンで、学名は Echinocereus fendleri。英名は Pinkflower hedgehog cactus、Fendler's hedgehog cactus。

The Pinkflower hedgehog cactus (Echinocereus fendleri) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a columnar cuctus that is distributed from New Mexico to Texas in the United States and northern Mexico. It grows on dry hillsides and rocky gravels and is 10 to 30 cm tall. It grows singly or in small clumps of 5 to 20. The stems are 5 to 7 cm in diameter and have 9 to 13 ribs. The stems have one central spine and 5 to 11 marginal spines. The purple-red, funnel-shaped flowers bloom near the stem tips from April to June. The fruits are bright red to purplish brown and edible.
