アメリカの南東部に分布しています。山地の尾根から低地の氾濫原までに生え、高さは２１〜３０メートルになります。樹皮は赤褐色で、不規則な鱗状に割れ目が入ります。葉は針状で長さは７〜１１センチあり、ふつう２個が束生します。果実は狭卵形の球果で、長さは４〜６センチほどです。建築用の合板の材料として重要な樹種のひとつです。

The Shortleaf pine (Pynus echinata) belongs to Pinaceae (the Pine family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed in the southeastern United States. It grows from mountain ridges to lowland floodplains and grows 21 to 30 m tall. The bark is reddish brown and irregularly scaly and cracked. The leaves are needle-like, 7-11 cm long, and usually grow in clusters of two. The fruit is a narrowly ovate cone, 4-6 cm long. It is one of the most important tree species used to make plywood for construction.
