アメリカの南西部、カリフォルニア州東部からユタ州に分布しています。砂漠の灌木帯に生え、高さは２５センチ以上、直径は１０センチになります。茎は卵形または円筒形で、直線および曲がった中棘で密に被われています。棘座には２４個以上の縁棘があります。３月から５月ごろ、黄色またはピンク色の花を咲かせます。果実は球形または長楕円形の液果で、鱗状です。

サボテン科エキノマスツス属の玉サボテンで、学名は Echinomastus johnsonii (syn. Sclerocactus johnsonii)。英名は Johnson's fishhook cactus。

Johnson's fishhook cactus (Echinomastus johnsonii) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a barrel cacti that is native to the southwestern United States; from eastern California to Utah. This cacti grows in desert scrub and it can reach up to 25 cm in height by 10 cm in diameter. The stem is egg-shaped or cylindrical and covered densely in straight and curving central spines with up to 24 radial spines per areole. The yellow or pink flowers bloom from March to May. The fruits are spheric to oblong, scaly berries.
