ヨーロッパの西部と南部それにイギリスにも分布しています。道端や海岸近くの野原に生え、高さは２０〜６０センチになります。全体に白い毛で被われています。基部の葉は卵形、茎葉は長楕円形から披針形です。５月から６月ごろ、茎の先に白色やピンク、青紫色の花を咲かせます。和名は、「おおばこ」の別名「しゃぜんそう（車前草）」と同じく、道端に生えることによります。

ムラサキ科シャゼンムラサキ属の一年草で、学名は Echium lantagineum。英名は Viper's bugloss、Paterson's curse。

The Viper's bugloss (Echium plantagineum) belongs to Boraginaceae (the Borage family). It is an annual herb that is native to western and southern Eorope include Britain. This herb grows on roadsides or in coastal grasslands and can reach 20-60 cm in height. The plant is covered with white hairs. The basal leaves are ovate and the cauline leaves are oblong to lanceolate. The white, pink or bluish purple flowers come on the terminal stems from May to June. Its Japanese name is derived from the fact that it grows along roadsides, as does "shazen-so", another name for "Oba-Ko".
