The Rainbow hedgehog cactus (Echinocereus rigidissimus) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a cylindrical shaped cactus that is distributed from the southwestern United States to northern Mexico. It grows in dry deserts, grasslands, and rocky areas, and grows to a height of around 50 cm. The stem is spherical or cylindrical, around 10 cm in diameter, and has 15 to 26 low ribs. New spines are initially reddish or magenta in color, but as they mature they turn yellow or pale pink. No central spine is formed. In spring, it produces bright pink flowers at the top of the stem. The throat of the corolla is white. The fruit is a round berry that is green to dark purple in color.
