中央アメリカが原産です。水中から茎を伸ばして、高さは５０センチほどになります。葉は広卵形で、赤褐色の斑があります。とくに若い葉に目立ちます。水面上に花茎を伸ばして白い花を咲かせます。

オモダカ科エキノドルス属の多年草で、学名は Echinodorus schlueteri。英名は Amazon sword。

The Amazon sword (Echinodorus schlueteri) belongs to Alismataceae (the Water-plantain family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Central America. It grows from the water with a stem that grows to a height of about 50 cm. The leaves are broadly ovate with reddish-brown patches. The reddish-brown spots are especially noticeable on the young leaves. White flowers bloom on stalks above the water's surface.
