ヨーロッパの中・南部が原産です。「るりたまあざみ（Echinops ritro）」の近縁で、高さは６０〜７５センチになります。茎は赤褐色です。葉は羽状深裂で灰緑色から銀灰色、先端には棘があります。５月から７月ごろ、球状花序に白色の頭花を咲かせます。

キク科ヒゴタイ属の多年草で、学名は Echinops sphaerocephalus。英名は Globe thistle。

The Globe thistle (Echinops sphaerocephalus) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to central and southern Europe. This herb is closely related to Echinops ritro and can reach 60-75 cm in height. The stems are red-brown. The leaves are deep pinnately, gray-green to silvery-gray with spine tips. The white flower-heads bloom in the globose clusters from May to July.
