アメリカの中南部、テキサス州からニューメキシコ州それにメキシコ北部に分布しています。チワワ砂漠（Chihuahuan Desert）の潅木帯や岩礫地に生え、高さは１５〜６０センチになります。茎は直立して叢生し、よく分枝します。円筒形の茎には１０〜１６稜があり、刺座（しざ）には９〜１４個の麦藁色の棘が生えます。３月から７月ごろ、直径８〜１２センチほどの桃紅色から赤紫色の花を咲かせます。果実は赤褐色に熟し、食用になります。園芸上は「あらむしゃ（荒武者）」と呼ばれます。

サボテン科エキノケレウス属の柱サボテンで、学名は Echinocereus stramineus。英名は Straw-colored hedgehog、Claret cup cactus。

The straw-colored hedgehog (Echinocereus stramineus) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a colunmar cactus that is distributed to the central-southern United States; from Texas to New Mexico and northern Mexico. This cactus grows in scrubs or screes, up to a height of 15-60 cm. The stems are upright, clumping and much branched. The columnar stems are 10-16 ridged, and the areoles have 9-14 straw yellow spines. It blooms dark pink to magenta flowers, up to 8-12 cm in diameter from March to July. The fruits ripen reddish brown and they are edible.
