バラ科サクラ属の落葉高木で、学名は Prunus pendula f. ascendens (syn. Cerasus itosakura var. itosakura f. ascendens)。英名は Edohigan。
The Edohigan (Prunus pendula f. ascendens) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed southward from Tohoku district of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. This tree grows in low mountain zone to mountain zone, and can reach about 15 m in height. This tree is long-live, will be over couple of hundred years old, and grows to a large stout tree. The pale rose pink flowers bloom before foliation from middle to late April. The calyx tube is inflated spherically at the base. The fruits ripen blackkish purple in late June. They are not too sweet and have biiter taste.
