わが国の本州、東北地方以南から四国・九州に分布しています。低山帯から山地帯に生え、高さは１５メートルほどになります。寿命が長く数百年以上といわれ、巨木になります。４月中旬から下旬ごろ、葉に先立って淡い紅色の花を咲かせます。萼筒の基部が球状に膨らむ特徴があります。果実は６月下旬には黒紫色に熟します。甘みは少なく苦みがいっぱい。 写真中３は、北杜市にある実相寺の「神代桜」。 |

バラ科サクラ属の落葉高木で、学名は Prunus pendula f. ascendens (syn. Cerasus itosakura var. itosakura f. ascendens)。英名は Edohigan。 |

The Edohigan (Prunus pendula f. ascendens) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed southward from Tohoku district of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. This tree grows in low mountain zone to mountain zone, and can reach about 15 m in height. This tree is long-live, will be over couple of hundred years old, and grows to a large stout tree. The pale rose pink flowers bloom before foliation from middle to late April. The calyx tube is inflated spherically at the base. The fruits ripen blackkish purple in late June. They are not too sweet and have biiter taste. |
