ブラジルの亜熱帯地方が原産です。水中葉は細長く対生し、「やし（椰子）」の葉を連想させます。水中葉は水草として鑑賞されます。でも成長してくると水面上に大きな水上葉を広げ、水中葉は枯れてしまいます。「ほていあおい」の仲間ですが、花弁の縁に細かな鋸歯があるのが特徴です。

ミズアオイ科ホテイアオイ属の多年草で、学名は Eichhornia azurea。英名は Anchored water hyacinth。

Anchored water hyacinth (Eichhornia azurea) belongs to Pontederiaceae (the Pickerelweed family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the sub-trocial regeon in Brazil. The aquatic leaves are slender, opposite and suggestive of the fronds of a palm. They are used as an ornamental aquatic plant. The large floating leaves are borne on the water surface when the plant grow mature. The flowers are pale bluish-purple with fine toothed edges.
