The "Ekubo-saishin" (Asarum gelasinum) belongs to Aristolochiaceae (the Birthwort family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is endemic to Iriomote Island in Japan's Yaeyama Islands. It grows on the forest floor of evergreen broad-leaved forests in low mountainous areas and reaches a height of 10 to 15 cm. It blooms with purple flowers from January to April. The calyx tube is short and cylindrical, with a wide opening, and bears three triangular-broad-ovate calyx lobes. It has 6 stamens and 3 styles, each with a horn-like projection at the tip. It is also known by the alternative name "Ekubo-kan-aoi".
