アメリカの東部から中部、カナダの東部に分布しています。落葉樹林や湿潤な氾濫原などに生え、高さは４０〜１２０センチになります。稈は直立またはやや下垂し、４〜８個の節があります。葉は線形で、幅７〜１５ミリです。５月から６月ごろ、茎頂に直立した穂状花序をだします。穂状花序は長さ４〜１２センチで、節が９〜１６個あり、節ごとに小穂が２〜３個つきます。種小名は、ロナルド・レイトン・マグレガーとフランク・ジョン・マグレガーに代表されるマクレガー一族を称えたものです。

The Early wildrye (Elymus macgregorii) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a pernnial herb that is distributed in the eastern to central United States and eastern Canada. It grows in deciduous forests and wet floodplains and is 40 to 120 cm tall. The culms are erect or slightly drooping and have 4 to 8 nodes. The leaves are linear and 7 to 15 mm wide. The erect spikes are produced at the top of the stem from May to June. The spikes are 4 to 12 cm long and have 9 to 16 nodes, with 2 to 3 spikelets per node. The specific epithet honors the clan McGregor, represented by Ronald Leighton McGregor (1919-2012) & Frank John McGregor (1891-1962).
