アメリカの中部、サウスダコタ州からテキサス州、アリゾナ州に分布しています。平原や大草原にふつうに生え、高さは３０〜９０センチになります。全体に粗毛が生え、羽状に深裂した葉が互生します。上部葉には粗い鋸歯があります。４月から７月ごろ、茎頂や葉腋から花梗をのばし、黄色い頭花を咲かせます。舌状花は８〜１０個あります。「ひまわり（向日葵）」の近縁ですが、花が太陽の光で開き、夜には閉じるという特徴があります。

キク科エンゲルマンニア属の多年草で、学名は Engelmannia peristenia（syn. Engelmannia pinnatifida）。英名は Engelmann's daisy、Cut-leaved daisy。

Engelmann's daisy (Engelmannia peristenia) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in the central United States; from South Dakota to Texas, Arizona. This herb commonly grows in plaines and prairies, and can reach 30-90 cm in height. It is covered with rough hairs, and the leaves are alternate and deeply cut pinnately. The upper leaves often have coarse teeth. The yellow, 8-10 ray flowers come on the stem spices or axiles in April to July. It closely resembles the sunflower but has the daisy chracteristic of closing the flower heads at night and opening them in bright sunlight.
