The Ensete (Ensete ventricosum) belongs to Musaceae (the Banana family). It is an evergreen herb that is distributed from Ethiopia in Africa to the Northern Province of South Africa. It mainly grows in tropical biomes with a dry season, and can grow to a height of around 6 m. It looks very similar to a banana, but unlike a banana, the fruit does not grow large, and instead the stem becomes much thicker. This stem and rhizome contain a large amount of starch, making it an important food crop in Ethiopia. The flowers rarely bloom, but when they do, they wither and die. Also known as "Ethiopian banana", "Abyssinia banana", and "false banana".
